The police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder of a 35-year-old woman in Kadaba police station limits on January 9.

Khatijamma, a mother of two, had been missing since January 9. Her body was found in Kumbaru forest on January 31. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal gave the names of the accused as Aziz (24), his sisters Afsana and Aseeda (20). Afsana married Khatijamma's younger brother. The accused murdered Khatijamma for jewellery. Mr. Goyal said Aziz wanted money to return to West Asia where he was working.

The investigation of the case was monitored by Dalit representatives as it was being frequently raised at the SC/ST coordination committee meetings held at the office of the Superintendent of Police. Mr. Goyal told presspersons on Wednesday that after Khatijamma's body was identified, a special police team was asked to work on the clues indicating the involvement of family members in the murder. Aziz, who was accused in two cases of theft in Sullia in 2006, was working in West Asia. He came to his native place four months ago. Mr. Goyal said Aziz and his sisters, who went to Khatijamma's house at Thannirupanta village in Punjalkatte police station limits on January 9, strangled her to death and took away her jewellery. They took the body in a van and dumped it in the forest between Gudiya and Subramanya.
