Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, said on Saturday that a special registration drive for transgender people will be taken up in Udupi district.

She was chairing a district-level transgenders’ coordination committee at the District Offices Complex, here.

Ms. Korlapati said that there were no clear figures of the number of transgender people in the district.

As many as 282 have identified themselves as transgenders in the district and 27 of them were receiving a monthly pension under the Mytri scheme.

Though there are more , they are not ready to identify themselves and, hence, it had not been possible to provide benefits of different government schemes to them, she said.

She directed the Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department, Gracy Gonsalves, to form special committees under tahsildars in all taluks to carry out the registration of transgender people. All efforts would be made to provide identity cards to them within August.

She directed the Police Department to take all steps to see that there were no atrocities committed against them.

All government departments should provide facilities available with them to them. They should hold a tri-monthly review meeting on this. They should pay special attention to the development of transgender people, she said.

Sanjeeva Vandse and Lavanya, social workers, gave detailed information about the problems faced by the transgender community.

Kaveri, member-secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Kumara Chandra, Additional Superintendent of Police, Chandrika, Inspector, District Women Development Corporation, were present.
