Chairman of the Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy and Ganesh Karnik, MLC, began their campaign for their re-election to the Council by listing the achievements of the State government and of their own during their term as MLCs, here on Saturday. They asked workers of the BJP to project this before the voters and help them to get re-elected.

They were participating in a meeting of BJP workers from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to prepare for the coming elections to the Council from North West Graduates constituency and North West Teachers' constituency. While Mr. Shankaramuthy will be BJP's candidate for the graduate constituency, Mr. Karnik will contest from the teachers' constituency. Their five-year term comes to an end in June.

Mr. Shankaramurthy said that he was among the 20 MLCs whose five-year term would end in June. Of them, 10 were from the BJP. Mr. Shankaramurthy said elections to 20 seats would be held between June 10 and 20.

Mr. Shankaramurthy urged workers to ensure that the BJP retained the two seats in the North West region comprising voters from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Kodagu, Shimoga and Davangere districts. “I have got elected in all the four elections held since this constituency was carved out in 1988. Similarly, our party has retained the seat in the last three elections to the Council from the teachers' constituency,” he said.

Mr. Shankaramurthy said that it was during his term as Higher Education Minister that 184 government degree colleges started operations. He spoke about the drinking water project, the 2020 vision document and the establishment of Biofuel Board during his term as Chairman of the State Planning Board.

Mr. Karnik said the BJP government had been spending more on education. He said in the third annual budget, the BJP government allocated Rs. 12,864 crore for education.

“This allocation is far higher than the Rs. 8,000-crore allocated by Maharashtra, which is regarded as the rich State,' he said.

Mr. Karnik said that it was because of his efforts that services of 3,746 teachers of job-oriented courses for pre-university students were regularised.

District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar and Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, spoke. Vice-presidents of the State BJP unit M.B. Bhanuprakash and Sulochana G.K. Bhat and Dakshina Kannada district unit president Padmanabha Kottari participated in the meeting.
