Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil on Wednesday appealed to residents to judiciously use water as otherwise the administration might have to resort to water rationing in May this year.
Speaking to reporters here, Mr. Senthil said that if pumping of water from the Thumbe vented dam could be brought down from 160 million litres a day to 140 MLD with judicious use, there would be no need for water rationing. Otherwise, the administration might have to resort to supplying water on alternate days.
Mr. Senthil said that Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. and Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) would have to shut down their operations from April 1 to cope with the likely shortage during summer.
Elsewhere in the district, Ullal and Mulki regions are facing some water scarcity where water supply through tankers is being arranged. There is no water problem in Puttur, he added.
The administration will make every effort to provide water where there is scarcity either through tankers or by sinking/repairing borewells. Taking wells/borewells on hire from private citizens too is on the cards, he said.
