The pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means scholarships for students belonging to minority communities will be credited to bank accounts of students by the end of this year, said Minister for Minority Welfare Qamar-ul-Islam.

Talking to reporters after visiting the post-matric hostel for girls here on Monday, Mr. Islam said that thanks to Jan Dhan Yojana of the Centre, the department has taken the initiative to ensure that students opting scholarship have bank accounts. This would help the department credit scholarship amount to students by the end of December.

“Generally scholarship amount for the current year was being sent by cheque to students the next year. But from this year it will be reaching students in December,” the Minister said.

Director of Directorate of Minority Welfare Akram Pasha said that, since July, students have been filing applications online seeking scholarship. The applications will be accepted till the end of this month. Mr. Pasha said around 12 lakh students will be receiving scholarship amounting to Rs. 30 crore by December.

The Minister said that despite the cut by the Union government in the grants for scholarship for minorities, the State government was continuing with the scheme by contributing more. While the Centre has given Rs. 97 crore, the State has kept aside Rs. 103 crore this year for scholarships.
