Sahyadri students win second prize at Aero Design Challenge

Students of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangaluru, won second place in overall performance in Micro UAV Class at Aero Design Challenge 2018, organised by Society of Automobile Engineers, India Southern Section, recently (SAE-ISS).

Team Challengers, the students’ team, also won the Best Design Report, for its UAV vehicle that lifted 1.5 kg highest payload, said a release from the college.

The two-day event was held at Anna University, Chennai, from July 11 to July 13. Team Challengers’ members included Pramod Kumar from 1st year Computer Science, Shamanth Gowda and Meghana Shetty from 2nd year electronics and communication, Abdul Shameer from mechanical engineering, Rakshith Karumbaiah and Pranamya A Y from 3rd year information science and Nanda Kumar from 4th year mechanical engineering.

The competition included static events where teams had to present their designs; dynamic events where the models where aircraft are flows up to five flights carrying payloads and a technical aircraft design workshop by SAI-ISS followed by prize distribution. First Day of the event included technical inspection and presentation of the models. On the second day, the team had assembly round and won 50 bonus points for completing the task within 89 seconds.

Third Day witnessed second flight rounds. Valedictory Ceremony concluded with prize distributions in the presence of Anna University Registrar S. Ganesan, SAE-ISS Chairman and TAFE Vice President S. Sriraman, Director, MIT Campus, K. Senthil Kumar and HoD of Aerospace Engineering of MIT Campus, Anna University B.T.N. Sridhar.

The second overall performer got a prize money of ₹50,000 and the best design report, ₹10,000.
