‘PU institutes violating norms’

May 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - MANGALURU:

Shikshna Rakshana Vedike has accused education institutions in the city of beginning admissions to I year Pre University course in violation of norms laid down by the government.

The Vedike has accused the Deputy Director of Pre University Education, who heads the district regulatory authority, of allowing institutions to violate norms and admit students by collecting hefty fees.

Lolaksha, a member of Vedike, said at a press conference that the government had brought out detailed circulars for admission to Pre University course and had also laid down a calendar of events. The admission process starts with issuance of application forms till May 18 and announcement of first selection list on May 27. “But most colleges have started admitting students. Some of them even before announcement of class 10 results (on May 12),” he said.

Mr. Lolaksha said the government had also directed institutions to display outside the college, details including seats available, break-up of course fees and other details. Not many institutions have put up such boards.

He said hefty fees was being collected on the grounds of giving training for IIT-JEE, CET and Bridge Course that was also in violation of State government norms.

Renni D’Souza, another member of Vedike, said education institutions were not providing students admission forms as prescribed by the State government. The institutions were also issuing advertisements in newspapers about the pre university courses, which was also a violation.

Mr. Loklaksha said the Deputy Director of Pre University Education has to monitor admission in 54 government, 43 aided and 51 unaided pre university colleges. “If he fails to take any action, we will be forced to approach Chief Secretary and also the High Court,” he said.
