Kota Srinivas Poojary, Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council, said on Saturday that creating and providing jobs for the youth was a challenge.

He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day Udyog Mela (job fair) organised by the District Administration, Dr. G. Shankar Government Women’s College and PG Centre, and Sanchalana Trust, here.

Mr. Poojary said that the population of the State was 6.5 crore. There were about 5 lakh government employees in the State. Nearly 50% of posts were vacant in the government offices. These posts were being filled on contract basis. This was because of the inability of the government to bear the financial burden. Udyog Melas such as the present one, helped eligible youth in finding jobs.

Mr. Poojary said that many people came to the offices of the legislators seeking employment for their children. But the legislators were not in a position to provide jobs for even the posts of anganwadi workers or midday meal workers. This was because there were clear government norms for employing people. Government jobs were also subject to reservations and merit. If about 1,000 jobs were being created in every Assembly constituency, there would not have been such rush for jobs, he said.

Candidates should have good communication skills to get employment, he said.
