Protest against power cut

March 31, 2013 11:55 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:05 pm IST - Udupi:

Members of the Udupi Zilla Krishik Sangha staged a dharna in front of the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) office here on Saturday against frequent disruption in power supply.

Bantakal Ramakrishna Sharma, who addressed the protesters, said the disruption in supply of power was affecting both agricultural and industrial sectors. Students preparing for examinations are also bearing the brunt, he said.

Though the coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) and the Varahi hydel project were functioning in the district, people were being subjected to inconvenience, he said.

At least 10 per cent of the power generated through the two plants should be reserved for the people of Udupi district, he said.

Urging Mescom to provide three-phase power in rural areas, Mr. Sharma said nearly 95 per cent of Mescom consumers in the district pay their bills on time.

The protestors later submitted a memorandum at the Mescom office.
