Police act swiftly, catch five men within an hour of reporting of offence

Swift action by the district and city police teams led to the arrest of five persons allegedly involved in robbing a businessman of Rs. 4.1 lakh in cash on Monday night. The five men were caught within an hour after they committed the offence.

The police said M. Subashchandra Nayak, the owner of a grocery shop, closed the shop and moved towards his house in his car in Vitla at 8 p.m.

Blocking the way

He was carrying with him Rs. 4.1 lakh in cash. The five men came in another car and blocked his way.

One of them used an air pistol to threaten him and then snatched the bag containing the cash. They all left in the car.

Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said Mr. Nayak came to the Vitla police station within a few minutes and reported the robbery.

After taking information of the type and colour of the vehicle used by the gang, Vitla Police Inspector Prakash Devadiga swung into action to trace it. The city police and the Kasaragod police were asked to place barricades and check for the vehicle.

Stopping it

With the vehicle seen moving towards Konaje, Konaje Sub Inspector Sudhakar and Ullal Sub Inspector Bharati joined hands to stop the vehicle.

The police succeeded in stopping the vehicle at the Konaje Police station and arrested the accused by 9 p.m. They recovered the entire amount that had been robbed, Mr. Sharanappa said.

The police gave the names of the arrested persons as Ramakrishna (29), Suchit Bhandary (27), Shreyansh Jain (31), Amulraj (36), all from Surathkal and Manjunath (40) of Hosepete.

Mr. Sharanappa said the accused told police they were in financial duress. A resident of Kasaragod asked these five to rob Mr. Nayak. Mr. Sharanappa said the accused had been planning to rob Mr. Nayak since four months. They are also tracing the person from Kasaragod, he said.
