Pilikula to host full dome film festival, planetarium conference

Three-day event to start on November 6

A three-day international full dome film festival and planetarium conference will be held at Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, Regional Science Centre at Pilikula here from November 6.

This flagship event is organised by the Pilikula Regional Science Centre Society and Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society, State Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, in association with M/s. infovision, Mumbai and Evans & Sutherland, USA for the first time in Pilikula, a release from the society said.

The focal theme for the conference will be “trends in planetarium technology” . The event spectrum includes conference sessions for targeted groups of academicians and planetarium professionals as well as full- dome shows (multiple shows) for the general public and students. In addition, several outreach activities for the student community of different age groups are also being organized, it said.

The keynote talks and presentations will be made by nationally and internationally acclaimed speakers in the conference.

A large number of producers, both national and international repute, will be participating in the festival. The entry for the conference sessions is for planetarium professionals, science centre curators, and astronomy practitioners, while the entry for the full dome festival is for the general public and is based on online registration, the release said.

In all, 14 speakers will speak at the conference. They are Mark Subba Rao , Director, Adler Planetarium, the U.S.; P. Sreekumar , Space Science Officer, Indian Space Research Organisation; Scott A. Niskach, Director for International Sale, Evans & Sutherland, the U.S.; Abhijith B. Shetye, Managing Director, Infovision (Infovision team + Vedarth); Vinayak Upasani , President, Astral Animation, Technologies, Ireland; Alexander from Ohira Tech, Japan; V. S. Ramachandran Director, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Kolkata; Bhamini Mahida ; Chief Curator, Surat Science Centre; Robin Sip , President, Mirage3D, Holland; Pramod Galagali , Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru; S. Soundarajaperumal , Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai; Pranav Sharma , Curator & Scientific Officer, Birla Planetarium, Hyderabad; N. Ratnashree , Director, Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi and Ravi Kiron , Director, Nehru Planetarium, Allahabad will speak at the conference.

The planetarium, established in March 2018, has an 18m nano-seam dome with 15 degree inclination having a hybrid projection system consisting of Opto-Mechanical System and Active 3D 8K Digital Projector. The state-of-the-art planetarium has a unidirectional viewing facility with a seating capacity of 173.
