The research team of the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), led by Femida Handy, Professor and Director, Ph.D. in Social Welfare Programme, visited the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management at Nitte in Udupi district on January 8.
A press release issued by the institute here on Thursday said that this was the outcome of the MOUs signed by the institute with the UPENN. In a lecture, K. Sankaran, director of the Institute, discussed at length the co-existence of apparent opportunities in the country He elaborated on the inherent nature of the Indians with ‘Jugaad mindset’ that contributed for the entrepreneurial economy of the country.
Speaking on ‘microfinance and SHGs movement: issues and concerns’, N.S. Shetty, Professor Emeritus of the institute, said the SHG banking linkage of India was one of the largest in the world. But now it had reached a stage of slow down phase and saturation. This was mainly because they had not fully graduated into micro enterprises. Microfinance is a tool for poverty alleviation and contributed to socio development in India, he said. N.K. Thingalaya, Professor Emeritus of the institute, spoke on the ‘recent developments in the Indian banking sector’.
The UPENN team also interacted with the MBA students of the institute on diverse issues.
