Following the success of a pilot project of subsidised cochlear implants to children with hearing loss of above 80 per cent in Dakshina Kannada, Legislators from Kolar and Kalaburagi districts have shown interest in getting the scheme in their districts, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader.

Talking to reporters before distributing digital hearing aid to children here on Wednesday, organised by Lions Club, Mr. Khader said,

“There is a demand to implement the scheme in other areas across the State,” he said.

The scheme was implemented in Dakshina Kannada with the assistance of Lions Club International, a speech and hearing institute, and also a private hospital. Camps were conducted to screen 200 children for hearing defects in the city in November last year. Of this, 10 children aged below five got implants.

This minimally invasive technique for cochlear implants was done under the supervision of J.M. Hans and Vasathi Anand at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Bengaluru.

Mr. Khader said a similar exercise will be done in Kolar and Kalaburagi.

Testing the newborn

The Minister said the State government was considering testing newborn children for hearing ability at all hospitals.

To do so, each of the 133 taluk hospitals and other government hospitals in the State should have Otoacoustic emission testing device that costs Rs. 4 lakh. “We are sending a proposal to have this device,” he said. Mr. Khader said the blood of newborn children was being tested at the government laboratory in C.V. Raman Nagar in Bengaluru to identify five to six genetic diseases in children.

Arrangements were being made to have this testing centre at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru, he said.
