Polling scheduled for November 12

On Thursday, the first day for filing nomination papers, no nomination papers were filed for the November 12 elections to the 60-member council of Mangaluru City Corporation, even as Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B. Rupesh issued an election notification.

October 31 is the last date to file nomination papers. They will be scrutinised on November 2 and the last date for withdrawing nomination papers is November 4. Counting will be taken up on November 14.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has announced its candidates for six wards.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, president of the district unit of the party Athaullah Jokatte said that the party would contest in 15 wards.

He said that Kabir Bajal would contest from Bajal ward, Muneeb Bengre from Bengre, Mishriya Hanif from Kannur, Samshad Banu from Katipalla North, Hanif Kavoor from Panjimogaru and Muzair Kudroli from Kudroli ward on behalf of the party.

Mr. Jokatte said that the party would release the list of other candidates within three days.

The SDPI won one seat for the first time in the elections held to the council in 2013.

The BJP has called a meeting in the city on Friday to seek suggestions before finalising its manifesto for the elections. The former MLC Ganesh Karnik is the convener of the manifesto committee.

District Congress Committee president and MLC K. Harish Kumar said that the party has received more than 150 applications from its members for party ticket. Their scrutiny will start on Saturday. The candidates will be finalised by Tuesday.

He said that party observer for the election V.R. Sudarshan will hold a meeting in the party office on Friday. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dinesh Gundu Rao will also arrive here on Friday. He will hold a meeting of party workers at Surathkal in the evening.
