They will be implemented in Bantwal taluk

The State government recently approved six more multi-village water supply projects for Dakshina Kannada, according to Chief Executive Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K.N. Vijay Prakash.

He told The Hindu on Friday that these were among the 43 multi-village water supply projects proposed for the district. The six projects would come up in Bantwal taluk.

One multi-village water supply project is being implemented to provide water to 17 villages under Kinnigoli gram panchayat, according to Executive Engineer of the panchayat S.L. Sathyanarayana.

He said it was not part of the 43 projects proposed. This project would cost Rs. 16.8 crore. Water for this project would be lifted from the Shambhavi river by constructing a jack well on the riverbed. The six projects approved recently would provide water to 54 habitations of Bantwal taluk. Water from the Nethravati would be lifted for the purpose.

The projects would cover villages under the jurisdiction of Sajeepamunnur, Karopady, Narikombu, Mani, Sangabettu, and Sarapady gram panchayats. The total cost of the projects had been estimated at Rs. 124 crore. The objective of the projects was to supply clean water to people in villages. It had been found that water being supplied in some of these villages from bore-wells had excess iron content. Hence, the source of water was being changed, he said.

Mr. Sathyanarayana said jack wells would be built on the riverbed for drawing water. Water from the jack wells would be lifted and treated before pumping either to overhead tanks or vast ground-level water reservoirs from where it would be supplied to villages.

He said the panchayat would maintain the water supply infrastructure for a year. Later, it would be transferred to the village water supply and sanitation committees.

Sajeepa Mooda, Sajeepa Nadu and Thumbe villages would get water from the Rs. 10-crore water supply project under Sajeepamunnur gram panchayat. Kanyana, Kolnadu, Vitla Padnur villages would be covered under the Rs. 19.85-crore project in the limits of Karopady gram panchayat, he said.

The Rs. 4-crore project in the jurisdiction of Narikombu gram panchayat would supply water to Goltamajalu and Balthila villages. Kadeshwalya, Ananthady and Veerakambha villages would get water from the Rs. 18-crore project in the jurisdiction of Mani gram panchayat, he said. The Executive Engineer said that Chennaithodi, Kukkipadi, Panjikallu and Rayi villages would get water from the Rs. 15-crore project in the limits of Sangabettu gram panchayat. Another Rs. 15-crore project would cover Navoor, Uli, Badagakajekar, Kavala Padur and Pilathabettu villages in the jurisdiction of Sarapady gram panchayat.
