The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) on Sunday successfully rolled the heaviest single consignment over-dimension cargo, handled so far by the port, on board MV Dong Bang Giant 2.
Last week, the 1,250-tonne column, manufactured at a heavy engineering industry in Baikampady Industrial Area meant for utilisation in a petroleum refinery, was moved into the Port premises.
The giant column was brought on a 56-axle, 448-wheel self-propelling truck to the port premises after one carriageway of NH 66 was made clear for the movement of the truck.
The column, being exported from the engineering firm, was meant to be used in an oil refinery in Nigeria, officials said. “This has been the heaviest single consignment handled by NMPT so far,” they added.
On Sunday, NMPT Chairman A.V. Ramana told The Hindu MV Dong Bong Giant 2, a barge, was also the first Mediterranean moor over-dimension vessel to call on the port. The consignment was rolled on to the barge at Berth No. 14, he added.
Officials said the barge was brought down to the level of the berth using ballast water. Thereafter, the 448-wheel entered the barge directly, they said.
