A four-day music festival began at Ravindra Kalabhavan here on Thursday with a vibrant performance by Rudrapatnam Brothers from Bangalore.
The festival is being organised by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sangeetha Parishath Mangalore, and Mangalore University.
The brothers – R.N. Thyagarajan and R.N. Tharanathan – who presented a well-structured two-hour concert, gave first glimpse into their prowess with the composition, “Kayabekenna Gopala…” in raga Brindavana Saranga in Adi tala.
The myriad ways in which the artistes presented the main line of the composition were impressive.
“Mamava Meenakshi Rajamathangi…”, the Muthuswami Dikshitar kriti in Varali raga, “Kannatalli Naapai…” of Thyagaraja in Devamanohari raga, Thyagaraja's Swararagasudha rasa…” in Shankarabharana raga, and “Sri Vighnarajambhaje…” in Ganbhinat raga were well-received.
Violinist Mattur R. Srinidhi received frequent appreciation from the main artistes for his alapana.
Mrudangist Arjun Kumar of Bangalore beautifully aided the chief performers.
M.A. Krishnamurthy of Bangalore accompanied them with ghatam.
Pre-inauguration concert by Nireeksha U.K. of the city, who won the first prize in the junior category music competition, organised in the run-up to the festival, was another highlight of the day.
