Multi-choice EVMs to be used for gram panchayat polls

K. Vidya Kumari, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said on Thursday that multi-choice electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used for the bypolls to 79 seats in 24 gram panchayat (GP) wards in Kundapur and Byndoor taluks in Udupi district.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Ms. Kumari said that the bypolls will be held for 33 seats in eight constituencies in Gangolli GP in Kundapur taluk; 25 seats in eight constituencies in Yedthare GP, and 21 seats in six constituencies in Byndoor GP in Byndoor taluk.

The total number of voters in the bypolls for Gangolli was 10,461, 8,112 for Yedthare, and 7,592 voters for Byndoor.

Along with these, bypolls will be held for a seat each for eight GPs, which had become vacant due to either death or resignation of the members. These include a seat in Ulloor, Kergalu, Bailoor, Nitte, Handady, Barkur, Yedthady and Kadekar GPs.

Nomination papers will be accepted on December 17, while the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is December 20.

The elections will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 2, 2019. The counting of votes would take place at the respective taluk headquarters from 8 a.m. on January 4. The multi-choice EVMs will be used for multi-member constituencies in Gangolli Gram Panchayat in Kundapur taluk, Byndoor and Yedthare Gram Panchayats in Byndoor taluk. Already the Election Commission had sent 20 ballot units and 20 control units to Udupi district for this purpose.

However ballot papers would be used for the remaining eight GPs.
