Zilla Panchayat CEO S.A. Prabhakar Sharma said on Friday that the Government had set a target of building 1,606 houses under the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) in the district this fiscal year.

Mr. Sharma told presspersons in Mangalore on Friday that the zilla panchayat would soon be sending a proposal to the Government on the construction of houses. In 2011-12, of the target of 1,841 houses under the scheme, 352 had been completed in the district while 986 were in different stages of construction. The construction of 508 houses was yet to start.

Under the Basava Vasati Yojana (BVY), 4,103 houses had been constructed in the district in 2011-12 as against a target of 6,782. The construction of the remaining houses was in progress. The State Government had set a target of constructing 2,000 houses each in all the five Assembly constituencies in the district this fiscal year.

Under the BVY, a beneficiary got Rs. 75,000 as subsidy and Rs. 20,000 as loan from the bank at 4 per cent interest rate for constructing a house. The beneficiary had to raise only Rs. 5,000.

Gram panchayats in the district had been directed to purchase a mobile telephone with global positioning system (GPS) and install it with the required software provided by the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation within 15 days. The GPS and the software would prevent any cheating with regard to the location of the houses under the housing schemes.

An action plan for implementing 817 drinking water projects at a cost of Rs. 33.95 crore had been prepared. The zilla panchayat had sent 28 proposals for drinking water under the Multi Village Scheme (MVS). They included 10 proposals each in Kundapur and Karkala taluks and eight in Udupi taluk.

A meeting of elected representatives of gram panchayats, taluk panchayats, and the zilla panchayat would be called in 15 days to explain the proposals and the implementation of the MVS.

Lab to Land

Under the Lab to Land programme of the Union Government, nearly 900 Bharat Nirman volunteers had been trained in Karkala taluk. Nearly 2,500 Bharat Nirman volunteers in Kundapur taluk and 2,000 volunteers in Udupi taluk would be trained in the coming days.

The Centre had been implementing 400 programmes in the State. The objective was to train the Bharat Nirman volunteers so that they would give information about these programmes to the people in the villages, Mr. Sharma said. Zilla panchayat president K. Shankar Poojary was present.
