A monkey was found dead near Hirgana village in Udupi district on Thursday. Rohini, District Health and Family Welfare Minister, told The Hindu on Thursday that the postmortem on the monkey had been conducted and the samples had been sent to the Viral Diagnostic Centre in Shivamogga.

With this, the death toll of monkeys in different parts of the district in the last one week had reached eight. So far there had been no positive or suspected cases of KFD in Udupi district.

The Health Department was conducting awareness programmes in the villages where monkey deaths had been reported and other rural areas on the precautionary measures to be taken with regard to the Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), Dr. Rohini said.
