Minister’s claim on child labour questioned

Labour Department says the district is not child labour-free.

June 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:30 am IST - MANGALURU:

The Campaign Against Child Labour-Karnataka has questioned a statement by Minister of State for Labour P.T. Parameshwar Nayak in Bengaluru on June 12 declaring Dakshina Kannada district as child labour-free.

In a statement, CACL-Karnataka Convenor Renni D’Souza said the statement has come as a surprise when the Labour Department itself said in March 2015 that the district was not child labour-free.

It was in their reply to a plea as per the Right to Information Act.

Checking the status

Mr. D’Souza said such a declaration should be made after duly checking the status and facts from gram panchayats, which had not been done so far. Mr. D’Souza said the first declaration had to be made at the gram panchayat level, followed by taluk and then the district levels.
