Mechanical engineering topics, which were hitherto not available in Kannada, are now available in Kannada Wikipedia.
According to U.B. Pavanaja, programme officer, Centre for Internet Society, Bengaluru, Kannada books on mechanical engineering are not available in the market. He said that the information available in Kannada Wikipedia had brought at least some relief to engineering students.
Addressing a workshop on writing for Kannada Wikipedia at St. Aloysius College on Sunday, he said that the topics were uploaded at a workshop at Sagar in Shivamogga district by a group in the last week of January.
He asked students to be creators of knowledge by writing to Kannada Wikipedia which had only about 20,000 articles. As writing required research, it helped develop wisdom and language and culture.
Mr. Pavanaja said that Kannada Wikipedia community, in association with other organisations, had organised workshops on writing to Wikipedia at Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru in the recent past. Topics related to Kannada literature, general science and women achievers and writers of the coastal belt had been uploaded.
The Wikipedia community has organised a series of workshops at different places this year to add contents to the Wikipedia.
Later, speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Pavanaja said that English Wikipedia had about 50 lakh articles. Kannada spoken by an estimated six crore people should have had more than a lakh articles.
He said that many Eurpoean languages like German, French had more than 10 lakh articles. Tulu Wikipedia, which was still in dormant stage, had over 1,000 articles.
Mr. Pavanaja said that contents all types of literature should be uploaded in Kannada if Kannada Wikipedia was to grow.
