Manipal to get sustainable transport system

Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, said on Saturday that a plan would be drawn by the district administration and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) to promote a sustainable transport system to reduce congestion in the educational hub of Manipal.

Chairing a meeting over reduction of traffic congestion in Manipal at the District Offices Complex, Ms. Korlapati said congestion was posing problems both for pedestrians and motorists. Presently, the widening and concreting work of the Udupi-Manipal stretch, which is part of National Highway 169A, was on. This was a suitable time to develop a plan to promote sustainable transport in Manipal.

The administration told the Department of Architecture, MAHE, to prepare a plan for sustainable transport, she said.

The plan should provide for footpaths, parking, parking for buses, a bicycle track and other requirements.

The DC would hold a meeting with the officers of the National Highways Division of Public Works Department on the implementation of this plan.
