‘Creative writing in Tulu is on the decline'

August 16, 2010 05:15 pm | Updated 05:15 pm IST - Udupi:

Writer Gananath Yekkar said on Sunday that more creative writing was needed in Tulu.

He was speaking at a function, organised by the Tulu Koota, in which the “Paniyadi Kadambari Prashasti” was presented to Vijaya Shetty Salethuru for her book “Thanne Thoduda Sonne”.

Stating that creative writing in Tulu had slightly declined in recent times, awards such as the one being presented to Ms. Salethuru would encourage Tulu writers to contribute to its literature.

Tulu literature was very rich, as had been testified by the 1,000-page book brought out by the Hampi Kannada University recently, he said. Writer late S.U. Paniyadi had made invaluable contribution to Tulu literature.

The writing style of Ms. Vijaya Shetty in her book was lucid and kept the reader interested throughout, Mr. Yekkar said. Ms. Salethuru said that men could come out of problems quickly in society, unlike women. Coming out of a problem was more important than fighting for equality, she said.

Vice-presidents of Tulu Koota Jayakar Shetty Indralli and U. Damodar, Deputy General Manager of Karnataka Bank K.C. Ramesh Rao and convener of the award committee Gangadhar Kediyoor were among those present.
