A 58-year-old mechanic died on the spot after he was run over by a sand-laden lorry near an arch in Arkula on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway on the outskirts of the city on Monday evening.
The Mangaluru Rural Police said that the sand lorry was going towards Bengaluru. Around 5 p.m., the lorry hit Padmanabha, a resident of Arkula, while he was crossing the road and ran over him.
The lorry driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot, the police said.
The police said Padmanabha worked as a mechanic in a unit servicing earth movers. He was not married. The police said they were searching for the lorry driver.
