Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh said on Tuesday that land had been identified for the construction of water treatment plant at Halady village in Kundapur under the project to bring Varahi river water to Baje dam to meet the drinking water needs of Udupi city.

Interacting with presspersons at the Press Club here, Mr. Jagadeesh said that the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) will finalise this land within this week. After this, it would take 15 months to construct the plant, he said.

On the increasing piles of garbage at the Solid Waste Management Plant at Alevoor village near here, Mr. Jagadeesh said that a Tamil Nadu based company had shown interest in bio-mining at this plant. This company had to submit estimates for bio-mining.

After that a decision would be taken for allocation from either the government or Swachh Bharat Mission or Udupi municipality for this purpose, he said.

On the construction of a port at Hejmady village in the district, he said that the process of identification of land for the construction of port was on. Some private land was also needed to be purchased for this purpose. The government would purchase it, he said.

Mr. Jagadeesh said that the ban on use of plastic was being implemented effectively in the district.

To a query, he said that already 40 gram panchayats had been provided with lands for construction of Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centres in the district. About seven gram panchayats would be given lands within a week. In the next three months, all the remaining gram panchayats would be provided with lands for construction of SLRM Centres, he said.
