Konkani meet from August 23


A State-level Konkani Literary and Cultural Sammelan would be held at the RSB Bhavan in Manipal on August 23 and 24.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Kasaragod Chinna, Convener of the Organizing Committee of the Sammelan said that the Sammelan would focus on the growth and development of literary and cultural aspects of the Konkani communities. Nearly 4,000 delegates were expected to participate in it.

As many as 42 communities including Mangalorean Catholic Christians and Muslim Navayats spoke different dialects of Konkani in the State. The Sammelan would bring all the 42 communities on a single platform.

Konkani literary seminars, poets’ meets, plays, and cultural programmes would be held during the Sammelan. Konkani novels and anthologies of Konkani poems would be released.

A Konkani book exhibition would be held at the venue. Since the Konkani communities had a rich and varied cuisine, this too, would be on display.

Sammelan President

Veteran journalist M.V. Kamath had been chosen as the President of the Sammelan. Noted Konkani writers such as Jayant Kaikini, S.M. Krishna Rao, and B. Gopalakrishna Pai, would participate in the Sammelan.

Konkani singers such as Puttur Narasimha Nayak, Mahalakshmi Shenoy and others too would participate. The paintings of the painter Vilas Nayak would be exhibited.

As many as 20 cultural teams would participate in the Sammelan procession at 3 p.m. on August 23. The procession would begin from Syndicate Circle and culminate at the venue of the Sammelan. The Sammelan would be inaugurated at 5 p.m. on the same day, Mr. Chinna said.

Logo released

The logo of the Sammelan was released here by the Honorary President of the Organizing Committee Chempi Ramachandra Bhat at the press meet here on Saturday.

Amrit Shenoy, Nagesh Kumar, Mahesh Thakur, Janardhan Bhandarkar, K.M. Shet, Nityananda Pai, members of the Organizing Committee, were present.
