July 13, 2012 02:34 pm | Updated 02:34 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Mr. Shet, who is physically challenged since childhood, had been an accompanying artiste for many singers.

The academy would felicitate Mr. Shet, who resides in Car Street. This will be followed by Mr. Shet’s 20-minute tabla presentation with Venkatesh Rao accompanying him on harmonium. The programme would be held on the premises of the academy at 4.30 p.m. Tabla artiste Mangaladas Guvadi K. and vocalist Vasanti R. Nayak would attend the programme.

Academy Chairman Kasargod Chinna said that the idea of organising a programme was to recognise the contribution of disabled artistes and writers. “It is the duty of the academy to encourage such talented persons. We are providing a forum for such artistes,” he said. Mr. Shet, he said, had been a much sought after accompanying artiste. He has accompanied well known vocalists including Puttur Narasimha Nayak. “We have made a start with the programme of Mr. Shet,” Mr. Chinna said.

Konkani ratha

The second leg of the Konkani Ratha, an initiative to give Konkani books to schools, would be held in Bantwal on July 13. The Academy had planned to visit 120 Konkani-teaching schools in the State and provide books printed by the Academy. Around 80 schools are located in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Mr. Chinna said the drive was to distribute 62,000 books of the academy. The books include those written by authors like Manjeshwar Govind Pai.

“We have to expose our young readers to Konkani literature. The Academy’s books cannot be kept in a store,” he said.
