A Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court in Puttur near here granted regular bail to Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) State convener Jagadish Karanth on Saturday in cases of inciting communal harmony and threatening public servants. The magistrate directed Karanth to appear before the Puttur Town Police every Sunday till the cases are decided; not to attend any public meeting in Puttur taluk and not to deliver provocative speech.
The HJV leader, who was arrested in Bengaluru on September 30, was granted interim bail the same night at Puttur. He was directed not to leave Puttur till the application for regular bail was disposed of.
Karanth had, during a Hindu Samavesha organised at Puttur on September 15, reportedly spoken bad about the police for their alleged anti-Hindu actions. Puttur Town Police had booked cases under Sections 505 (1)(c), 505 (2), 153(a) and 189 of Indian Penal Code against Karanth.
