Maheshwara Rao, District Incharge Secretary, on Friday directed the district administration to issue summons to the Chief Manager, South Zone, National Highways Authority of India for not completing the widening of National Highway 66 in Udupi district within the given time.

He was chairing a district-level review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, here.

Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, said the NHAI was delaying the work, and the deadline was being extended repeatedly, resulting in disruption of traffic. There was also public opposition over the delay, to which the NHAI officers were not responding, she said.

Mr. Rao said the administration should summon the chief manager and seek an explanation from him for the delay.

While doing department-wise review, Mr. Rao directed the officers to construct concrete footbridges at places where there were wooden footbridges. The Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat should supervise this matter, he said.

Crop insurance should be made compulsory for all the farmers availing crop loans. This would help in giving compensation to the farmers for any damage to the crops. The cooperation department should take the initiative in this regard. The bank accounts of the farmers availing loan waiver should be linked to their Aadhaar numbers. This process should be completed as soon as possible, Mr. Rao said.

A proper scheme should be drawn up by urban local bodies to promote solid waste segregation at the source level as this would help in its proper disposal. They could use the biowaste for producing gas, he said.

The officers should try to get quick sanction for the proposals for construction of sea walls. This would help in starting the works soon, he said.

Shivananda Kapashi, CEO of Zilla Panchayat, G. Anuradha, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhoobalan, Assistant Commissioner, were among those present.
