Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim on Tuesday instructed authorities of the Kukke Subrahmanya temple to install 60 closed circuit television cameras at a total cost of Rs. 49 lakh to tighten security measures.

At a meeting in his office he said that authorities at the Kukke Subrahmanya temple and the Kateel Durgaparameshwari temple should give preference to local people while appointing security personnel.

He instructed local panchayats to take action against those polluting the Nandini river in Mangalore taluk. Water tanks supplying drinking water in both the temple towns should be cleaned every week, he said.

Officials informed the meeting that at Kateel temple, of 21,000 sarees, offered to the temple by the devotees, 7,000 sarees have been auctioned for Rs. 8 lakh. The auction of the remaining sarees was under progress.

They said that a handbook on the Kukke Subrahmanya temple had been prepared and the construction of guest houses will be over by October.

Private security

Additional Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, T.P. Shivakumar told The Hindu that the Police Department had proposed for a separate private security wing for the Subrahmanya temple.

Following a security audit by the Department on a request by the Muzarai Department, the police have proposed 150 private security personnel to be posted at the temple, lodges and places where pujas were performed, he said.
