Inquiry into death of 'child worker' begins

An inquiry is being conducted into the death of a suspected child worker, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a work-related accident early on Wednesday.

The worker, whose age is yet to be determined, hails from Omri village in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh and was working at Empire Glass at Karangalpady.

According to sources, the worker was unloading glass sheets from a truck when over 10 sheets fell on him. According to officials in the private hospital where he was admitted, Sahdan was brought there around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday and died around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Mohammed Mehfooz, uncle of Sahdan, said the employers were making arrangements to send the body to Delhi. However, intervention by the Child Welfare Committee and the police ensured that a medical test was conducted during the post-mortem to determine the age of the boy. The police said the complainant was one Ramdas Prabhu of Empire Glass. According to the complaint, Sahdan was hit by a vehicle that was reversing.

A case had been registered against one Clavin Crasta. Mangalore East Police Inspector P. Kiran said the post-mortem report and the report on the age test were awaited. Labour Officer Anandamurthy said according to workers at Empire Glass, the accident occurred at 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday. When told that according to hospital officials, Sahdan was admitted at 5.30 p.m. the previous day, he said he was conveying the information he had been given.
