Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala D. Veerendra Heggade on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Speaking at a rally of members of self-help groups (SHGs) formed by Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at the Ratnavarma Heggade Stadium here, he said: “Our mother tongue is Tulu. This language has still not been given its due place among the other recognised languages of our country… I have presented a memorandum to your goodself (on the same demand) in New Delhi earlier.”

Mr. Heggade said that Mr. Modi has brought the government much closer to the people.

“Today, the whole country is feeling a sense of oneness. In the last three years, I feel, there has been a change in India,” Mr. Heggade said.

He said that the SKDRDP has proposed to facilitate 40 lakh Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts by June 2018.

Now, its 12 lakh self-help group members have their accounts opened under the yojana.
