I was assaulted by son of former Mayor: Bava

While claiming that he was assaulted by Azimudeen Sheikh, son of former Mayor Gulzar Banu here on Wednesday in connection with MCC council polls, B.A. Mohiuddin Bava, former MLA, said on Friday that a case against Ms. Banu and her son had been registered on a complaint by his former personal assistant Mohammed Harris, who he said was also assaulted on the same day.

The alleged assault in front of a hotel in the city was in connection with the party issuing tickets for the November 12 election. The party announced the list of candidates at a press conference in the hotel on Wednesday. The Mangaluru East Police arrested Sheikh in this connection on Thursday. A court sent him to Mangaluru District Prison on the same day.

Mr. Bava told reporters here on Friday that he left the hotel without making any issue out of the assault on him outside the hotel.

“My personal assistant was also hit and an attempt was made by the assaulter to hit him with a no-parking board lying at the place. He was perturbed and he filed the complaint.”

The police, Mr. Bava said, came to the hospital he was admitted following the assault and took his statement.

Denying the allegation of Ms. Banu that he had taken ₹10 lakh and failed to get her a seat, Mr. Bava said he has not taken a single penny from anybody.

Ms. Banu was aspirant for the party ticket from Katipalla North (Ward No.5) ward from where she was elected twice and lost in the earlier council elections. This is the ward in which Chokkabettu, the area in which Mr. Bava stays. In order to get a winning candidate, Mr. Bava said the party selected Fathima B., daughter of senior Congress leader Umarabba.

On October 30 morning, Mr. Bava said Ms. Banu met him at his house. “I asked her to meet senior party leader B. Janardhana Poojary and other leaders and influence the party high command for change in the candidature,” he said.
