Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, on Wednesday expressed her concern over the increase in incidents of infant mortality in Udupi district and directed the Department of Health and Family Welfare to submit a report on it.

Chairing a meeting on different units of the department, Ms. Korlapati said that it should give details on regions that had more cases of infant mortality and the reasons for this. There were seven cases of infant mortality in the district in April alone. Of these seven, four were female babies. This made it a serious matter, she said.

Compared to last year, there was an increase in the number of babies born in the district.

As many as 14,775 babies had been born in the district from March 2018 to April 2019, compared to 14,760 babies in the corresponding period last year.

It is in this backdrop that Ms. Korlapati sought a comprehensive report on infant mortality in the district in April 2019. Seven women died of delivery related problems last December. Hence, hospitals should have emergency facilities, she said.
