June 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:14 am IST - MANGALURU/UDUPI:

Reportedly depressed over the alleged harassment by a police constable, a 17-year-old girl, who was in love with the constable, was found hanging in her room at her house in Kumpala in Ullal police station limits on Wednesday around 7 a.m.

Her mother, a retired teacher, had gone for her morning walk when the incident occurred. When she returned home, the house was found locked from the inside. She took the help of neighbours to break open the door only to find her daughter dead in the room.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) Kalyan Shetty said that they have recovered a note purportedly written by the girl where she has alleged harassment by Praveen Salian, a District Armed Reserve constable deputed as security guard to Vijay Bank branch in Puttur.

The girl has, in the note, said that she came in contact with Salian through Facebook and fell in love. Salian, she alleged, harassed her after she went to meet her friends.

He, the girl said, demanded Rs. 1 lakh or gold for not revealing their relationship to her family members.

Mr. Kalyan Shetty said that she was a student of first year of B.Com in a city college. A few days ago she had revealed to her friends the harassment allegedly caused by Salian. On a complaint, the Ullal police have registered a case against Salian. He has been taken into police custody for investigation, Mr. Kalyan Shetty said.

Chandravati’s husband Chidananda Poojary lives in Puttur. The police said that it appeared to be a case of suicide. They are yet to establish the reason that prompted her to jump into the well, the police said.

Man arrested on charge of murder

The police arrested a person on the charge of murdering his eighty-year-old mother-in-law at Uppinakudru village coming under Kundapur taluk on Wednesday.

According to the police, Janardhan used to quarrel often with his mother-in-law Janaki Sherugar (80) over money. Janaki used to stay alone in her house close to her son Ganesh Sherugar’s house. Janardhan had stayed at Janaki’s house on June 9.

At around 10 p.m. on June 9, Mr. Sherugar heard loud cries of his mother. So he rushed to her house. He found her lying dead on the floor with blood flowing from her head. Janardhan had a wooden rod in his hand. As soon as he saw Mr. Sherugar, he fled from the spot.

Mr. Sherugar, in his statement to the police, said that Janardhan used to pick up fights with Janaki for money. Since she did not give any money on Tuesday night, he killed her with the wooden rod, he said.

A case under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been registered at the Kundapur police station and investigations were on, the police said.

P.M. Diwakar, Circle Police Inspector, told The Hindu that the police arrested Janardhan in the village at around 9 a.m. on Monday. He was produced before the court in Kundapur, which remanded him in judicial custody for 15 days, he said.
