After the recent Socio-Economic Survey, another set of staff deputed by the government will knock at the doors of people in the jurisdiction of Mangaluru City Corporation on Thursday and Friday. This is to identify how many houses do not have toilets.

Though the enumerators who conducted the caste census did record whether the houses have toilets or not, this time the corporation would conduct the survey for the Union government under the Swachch Bharat Mission.

But in reality, the field staff, who are called Swachh Bharat Mission assistants and swachchata dhoots, are unlikely to visit all houses and may visit only such areas where they suspect houses might be lacking toilets. The objective of this survey is to find toilet-less houses and provide financial assistance, both from the Union and State government, for the construction of toilets, to stop open defecation.
