Forum Mall goes Wi-Fi

Sampark Highspeed Net to roll out services through Wi-Fi hotspots

October 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - MANGALURU:

Residents of Dakshina Kannada can experience seamless Internet connectivity through Wi-Fi at reasonable rates soon as a private Internet service provider is planning to set up at least 100 Wi-Fi hotspots across the district.

The service is being provided by Sampark Highspeed Net, promoted by Western Institute of Technology, Mangaluru. Speaking at the inauguration of Wi-Fi hotspot at Forum Fiza Mall here on Sunday, Institute President Walter Stephen Mendes said the concept ‘Wi-Fi Mangaluru’ aims at Internet penetration across the district.

He said that more than 100 Wi-Fi hotspots would be created in the district with subscribers being able to access Internet up to 500 metres from the Wi-Fi hotspot through mobile phones, computers etc. Besides Mangaluru, other towns, including Moodbidri, Kinnigli, Bantwal, B.C. Road, Vitla, Puttur, Sullia, Surathkal, Thokkottu, Ullal, Belthangady, Mulki, etc., would also be brought under the Wi-Fi hotspot, he said.

Mr. Mendes said the company would set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in an area if there are at least 250 subscribers. He claimed that Wi-Fi Mangaluru was the only one which provided free service to Mangalureans till January 2016. Later the services would be charged at Rs. 60 for 2 GB per month. He said compared to other internet service providers, who charge up to Rs. 250 per 1 GB, Sampark was far cheaper. The facility would largely benefit rural masses as well as the student community in the district, he said.

Hotspots would be set up at malls, parks, railway stations, government offices, hotels, professional colleges and other institutions as per the demand.

Forum Fiza Mall in Pandeshwar got a Wi-Fi hotspot on Sunday after it was formally inaugurated by Minister of State State for Youth Empowerment and Sports K. Abhayachandra Jain in the presence of district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai.

The Wi-Fi hotspot is created by Sampark Highspeed Net and visitors to the mall could experience seamless Wi-Fi services, said Walter Stephen Mendes, president of Western Institute of Technology, which promotes Sampark.

The service would be available for free till January 2016, after which it would be available for Rs. 60 a month for 2 GB, he said.
