Various arrangements had been made to help the voters at the polling booths in Udupi district for the State Assembly elections on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, said that to help the sick and those with physical disabilities, wheelchairs would be provided in 555 polling booth areas.

Magnifying glasses would be provided to those who suffer from eyesight problems at 328 polling booths.

Tokens would be provided to voters at all polling booths in Kundapur Assembly Constituency so that they need not stand in queues.

The voters would be given tokens and they could sit in a room next to the polling booth and exercise their franchise when their turn came.

The Election Commission had already released an app so that people could know the exact status of queues at the polling booths in the urban areas.

This facility will only be available at the four urban local bodies of Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala and Saligrama in Udupi district.

There will be webcasting of the polling from 132 booths in all five Assembly constituencies. The polling activities would beamed live to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and at the offices of the State and Central Election Commission offices.

All hotels and lodges had been informed through their respective associations not to allow people from other places to stay for campaign purposes from Thursday to Saturday.

However people coming for marriage function and other purposes would not be affected by this directive.

Arrangements had been made to take the polling staff from the three Mustering and De-mustering Centres, Bhandarkars College, Kundapur, St. Cecily’s PU College, Udupi, and Manjunath Pai Hall, Karkala, to their respective polling booths on Friday afternoon.

This time, the polling booth staff would be provided with first-aid kits, ORS packets, and even mosquito coils. The Akshara Dasoha workers would cook food for them, Ms. Francis said.
