Excise duty, service tax evasion detected

Mangaluru regional unit of the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), which completed one year on Thursday, has detected 21 cases involving evasion of Rs. 6.25 crore, in all, Central excise duty and service tax during the period. Of the amount, it recovered Rs. 5.38 crore, DGCEI Joint Director B. Sumidaa Devi has said in a release. The directorate has appealed to people to report any instance of service tax, Central excise duty evasion. Informers who provide credible information resulting in detection of duty evasion would be rewarded up to 20 per cent of the duty evaded as per government guidelines from time to time.
