It is now a month since Mangaloreans were promised that roads would be pothole-free within a week. But there is no change on the ground.

In September, K. Deepak Poojary, Chairman, Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement, had told the monthly meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation council that filling up works would begin in a week.

But there are plenty of them on Mahaveera Circle-Karavali Junction Road, Mahaveera Circle – Kankanady Road (the road adjacent to Father Muller Hospital compound), Nanthoor – Kadri Road.

Gerald Towers, a member, Nagarika Hita Vedike, Lower Bendore said the corporation had enough time this year to fill them up due to less rain.

“The corporation has ignored the inconvenience caused to commuters,” he alleged. He had recently staged a novel protest at Mallikatta by acting like a devil to highlight the issue.

Mr. Poojary told The Hindu that work on Mahaveera Circle – Karavali Junction Road would be taken up on Saturday while worn out stretches on the road adjacent to the Father Muller Hospital would be relaid on Monday.

Similarly, the potholes on Nanthoor – Kadri Road would be filled up soon after this.

He said potholes on the roads in Mangaladevi area, Jeppu, Mahakalipadpu main road have been filled up.

Referring to the lack of drains and footpaths on many concrete roads he said they would be built on nine main roads in phases by calling short term bids, each work costing Rs. 45 lakh, five times with an interval of 15 days each. Works would be taken up one after another.

He claimed that major contractors were not coming forward to take up small works like building drains and footpaths.
