The VI Additional District and Sessions Judge Sayeedunnissa on Thursday sentenced ‘Cyanide’ Mohan to life for murdering a 26-year-old woman from Paivalike in Kasaragod district of Kerala in 2006.
He was also sentenced to 10 years each for offences under Section 328 (administering stupefying drug) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), seven years for offence under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), five years for Section 392 (robbery), and one year for Section 417 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
The judge said all sentences will run concurrently and also fined him ₹25,000.
According to the chargesheet, Mohan introduced himself to the woman as Sudhakar, an employee of an insurance company, and promised to marrry her.
On March 20, 2006, the victim and her aunt went to lunch with Mohan in Mangaluru. After lunch, the aunt returned to her house while the victim accompanied Mohan to Madikeri.
Mohan sexually assaulted the woman at a lodge in Madikeri and then took her to the Madikeri bus stand where he gave her a cyanide pill telling her that it was an abortion pill.
The woman ate it and died in the washroom of the bus stand. Mohan left the place with her jewellery.
The Bantwal police arrested Mohan on August 21, 2009, when he revealed about murders of the 26-year-old woman, and 19 other women.
Prosectuor Judith O.M. Crasta produced evidence of 41 witnesses, including two women who survived Mohan’s murder bid.
On Thursday, the Judge directed the District Legal Service Authority to take steps to grant compensation to the victim’s parents under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
