Secretary of the Department of Commerce and Industry and in-charge Secretary of Udupi district M. Maheshwar Rao on Wednesday instructed Fisheries Department officials to cut diesel subsidy to fishing boats that indulge in bull trawling and light fishing.

Speaking at a review meeting here, Mr. Rao said that he would further take up the matter with the government to amend the Karnataka Marine Fishing Act to enable the Fisheries Department to impose heavy fine on the owners of such boats and cancel their licences. The Act should also enable constituting a squad to catch such boats.

He asked the department officials to seek the help of the police to prevent fishermen from taking generator sets for light fishing while leaving the port. Mr. Rao also asked the officials to fix a tracking system in boats to trace their movements and collect the details of all fishermen sailing out, at the diesel bunks in the fishing harbour itself.

He asked the Department of Women and Child Welfare officials to submit details of vacancies in the department in the district and the need to have a hostel for working women. He asked the Horticulture Department to take steps to effectively market Mattu Gulla and Udupi Mallige.

Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh was present.
