The Dakshina Kannada Regional Transport Authority is examining a proposal to impose ‘corrective class’ punishment for violators of traffic rules.
Speaking at the inauguration of 26th National Road Safety Week here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said, mere imposition of fine would not be sufficient. Driving License should be restored only after the offender undergoes the corrective class, he said.
Stressing the importance of pedestrian safety, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner, S. Murugan said India has to go a long way in this regard. Road safety should be imbibed as part of life, he suggested.
Inaugurating the celebrations, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, S.R. Bansal said children are the best messengers to take home the road safety campaign. Earlier hundreds of school children participated in an awareness jatha .
Regional Transport Officer Afzal Ahmed Khan explained the significance of the drive. On the occasion the district administration felicitated Charmadi Hasababba, Sanam Nazeer, J. Abdul Rawood, Nelson Pereira and Belur Murugan field their contribution towards road safety.
Mangaluru South MLA J. R. Lobo suggested involvement of traffic volunteers, strict enforcement of law, etc would help improve road safety.
