CITU: government should take a stand on sand policy

The members of the Karnataka State Building and Other Construction Workers' Federation, affiliated to the CITU, have asked the State government to take a stand on sand mining. The members of the federation carried out a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Mangalore on Monday.

Norms

The protesters said under the guise of controlling illegal sand mining, the State government had been tightening the norms related to sand extraction and mining.

This had led to scarcity of sand and raised the price of sand from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 6,000 a lorry load. This had rendered many construction workers unemployed as there was considerable drop in the construction work
