Chess tournament inaugurated

40 teams in two categories registered for event

The District-level CBSE and ICSE Schools’ chess tournament was inaugurated at Don Bosco School at Trasi near Kundapur on Saturday.

A press release issued here said that Derick Pinto, managing director of Derik’s Chess School, inaugurated the tournament by lighting a lamp and making the first move on a chess board. Speaking on the occasion, he encouraged the students to give their best.

“Chess makes a person mentally strong and stable. It is also important to be emotionally strong in order to excel in chess and hence it is termed as the king of mental games,” he said.

As many as 40 teams under two categories, Under-14 and Under-17, have registered for the tournament.

Prasanna Rao, chief arbiter of the tournament, was the guest of honour. Fr. Maxim D’Souza, Principal, presided over the function.

Fr. Leo Pereira, rector and administrator, Fr. Merwin Fernandes, vice principal, were present. Fr. Leo welcomed the gathering. Teena proposed the vote of thanks.
