RTA meeting today

A meeting of the Regional Transport Authority has been called on Friday at the office of the Deputy Commissioner to discuss the autorickshaw fares. Auto drivers have been protesting for the last two days against the decision to reduce the minimum fare from Rs. 25 to Rs. 20. The meeting called by the Regional Transport Officer Afzal Ahmed Khan with auto drivers has failed to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Mr. Khan has said the authority will be forced to allow autos from other parts of the taluk to operate in the city if the city auto drivers do not ply as per the fare fixed.

‘Police should continue probe’

Alleging that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had called for protests against the police following a case against RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, the Democratic Youth Federation of India has asked the police not to buckle under pressure and continue the investigation.

State president Munir Katipalla said the VHP’s Hindu Samajothsava at Puttur recently had led to communal tension in many parts of the district and said those responsible should be arrested.

Flower show

Visit to Dalit colony

Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim on Thursday visited the Dalit colony in Kallakere where recently a group of seers had lunch with residents. Mr. Ibrahim saw the poor state of the houses and its sewerage system. He directed officials to prepare a draft proposal for improving the basic amenities in the area where there are as many as 50 Dalit houses and 13 Koraga houses.

No support for bandh

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association has decided against participating in the bandh called on February 2 against the privatisation of anganwadis. In a statement, the association’s president Vishalakshi said during a recent meeting with the Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Maneka Gandhi had assured them that the government will not privatise anganwadis.

MP visit

CPI (M) MP from Tripura and Adivasi Adikar Manch National President Jitendra Chowdhury will be taking part in the State-level meeting of Adivasi Rights Coordination Committee to be held at the Banjaru Malekudiya Colony in Neriya in Belthangady taluk. The meeting will be held on February 10.
