‘BJP has double standards over Tipu’

The former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Wednesday that Bharatiya Janata Party leaders such as Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Large- and Medium-Scale Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar had adopted double standards with regard to Tipu Sultan.

He was speaking at the valedictory of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi organised by the district unit of the Congress and the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Sanghatane (RGPRS), here.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said as the head of the Karnataka Janata Paksha, Mr. Yediyurappa had donned the headgear and dress like Tipu. Mr. Shettar had written a foreword for a book on Tipu where he had described Tipu as patriot who had fought against the East India Company. Now, both of them had forgotten this and wanted to remove Tipu from textbooks.

They were now saying that Tipu was communal. “They are doing this because I started Tipu Sultan Jayanti. But I also started the Kittur Rani Chennamma Jayanti, Kempe Gowda Jayanti, and Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti. This is because they are all historical figures. It is Tipu Sultan who introduced silk and rocket technology in the country,” he said.

House handed over

Earlier, Mr. Siddaramaiah and Dinesh Gundu Rao, KPCC president, handed over a house called ‘Gandhi Kuteera’ constructed by the RGPRS for a poor Dalit woman, Nalini, at a cost of Rs. 4.8 lakh at Balaipade, here.
