The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is in the process of making its Bankers’ Institute of Rural Development (BIRD) campus at Bondel completely eco-friendly, said K. Lakshminarayana, Joint Director, BIRD.

Addressing presspersons on the 38th Foundation Day of NABARD on Friday, he said that BIRD has achieved self-sufficiency in power consumption by harnessing 90kW of solar power. It will make the campus plastic-free. As a first step in this regard, it has stopped using plastic water bottles and glasses, he said.

“BIRD will harvest rainwater in a big way. The campus will use drip irrigation for gardening. Landscaping will be done and it will soon have its own website,” he said.

Delivering the Foundation Day lecture, P.S. Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, spoke about the role of universities in agriculture and rural development.
