Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Sasikanth Senthil S. has banned the movement of heavy vehicles on the Charmadi Ghat, the only gateway to Dakshina Kannada from the mainland now. A notification issued by him late on Friday said that bullet tankers, ship cargo containers, long chassis vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles, multi axle trucks, truck trailer and all heavy loaded goods vehicles can’t ply on the Ghat on National Highway 73 till further orders.

However, buses, cars, jeeps, vans, two-wheelers, mini-vans can ply.

He said that following a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on the Shiradi and Sampaje Ghats traffic pressure on Charmadi Ghat had increased.

Heavy vehicles had been causing traffic jam and landslips have been reported at some stretches and it has been raining heavily on the ghat since two days.
